How should regulation be paid for?
The way in which the cost of regulation is currently allocated through the practising certificate fee leads to anomalies and unfairness. The Legal Services Act 2007 provides the opportunity for a fairer system, in which more of the costs are apportioned to organisations supplying legal services, rather than falling on individual solicitors. It is important that the SRA hears our views. Please participate in the SRA’s second consultation on proposals to address this situation. The consultation closes on the 22nd January 2010.

The consultation paper “Moving toward a fairer fee policy: Second consultation” is available on the SRA website at http://www.sra.org.uk/sra/consultations/fee-policy-second-december-2009.page

There is also a news release at: http://www.sra.org.uk/sra/news/press/detailed-proposals-published-on-how-regulation-should-be-paid-for.page

SPG replies to Consultation papers on behalf of SPs and it is important that we hear your views on issues and you may also wish to respond to Consultations when they particularly affect you and your firm. Martin Smith of the Executive Committee co-ordinates SPG's responses and would be happy to hear from you!
